The Disappearance of Giannina and John: A Sibling Mystery That Still Haunts Puerto Rico

Two children vanished on their way to the beach in 1974 — and half a century later, their story remains one of the island’s most heartbreaking unsolved cases.

It was a sunny spring day in May 1974 when siblings Giannina Maria Colonna Aponte, 11, and John “Gianot” Colonna Aponte, 12, left their home in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, for what should have been a carefree day at the beach. They never returned.

The children were last seen heading out with a family friend and his three children, a familiar outing that gave their mother no reason to worry. But when she met up with the man later, he delivered a chilling revelation: Giannina and John weren’t with him. They had vanished.

As investigators scrambled to piece together what had happened, the case took a disturbing turn. A man named Thomas Rodriguez died by suicide — but not before leaving behind a note that confessed to a kidnapping plot. In that note, he explained the plan: Giannina and John had been abducted for a $72,000 ransom.

Despite this confession, no arrests were ever made. The investigation stalled, and the leads dried up. The Colonna Aponte children — bright, joyful, and deeply loved — were never found. Their disappearance remains one of the most haunting cold cases in Puerto Rican history.

Giannina, with her black hair, black eyes, and a small birthmark on her right cheek, was just beginning adolescence. John, slightly older with brown eyes and black hair, was stepping into his teenage years. Their futures — their dreams, milestones, and the ordinary joys of growing up — were stolen on a day that should have ended with sand in their shoes and sun on their skin.

The case has long been a painful reminder of how quickly a life can be erased — and how justice can remain elusive even when clues are left behind. For their family, the agony of “what if” and “where” still lingers more than five decades later.
