Vanished on Highway 301: The Unsolved Disappearance of Stephanie Jane Howard

Nearly 24 years later, a Georgia family is still searching for answers about the night their daughter disappeared without a trace.

It was a Friday night in Jesup, Georgia, when 22-year-old Stephanie Jane Howard—known to friends as Neffie or Steffie—walked out of a local bar and into a mystery that has haunted her family for nearly a quarter of a century.

On November 30, 2001, Stephanie spent the evening visiting two popular hangouts—The Fox’s Lair Bar and the Daily News Pub, located between Plum Street and Cedar Street along southbound Highway 301. Around 9:00 p.m., she parted ways with friends outside the Daily News Pub and walked away into the night. That was the last confirmed sighting of her.

A truck driver and his wife later reported that they had given a young woman matching Stephanie’s description a ride to Florida, possibly near Daytona. Investigators could never confirm if that woman was indeed Stephanie.

The Howards were a tight-knit family—the kind of small-town, southern household where you didn’t see one without the others close behind. When Stephanie stopped calling home, her family immediately knew something was wrong.

She was deeply close to her father, calling him every day. When the phone stopped ringing, her sisters feared the worst.

In the early days, leads trickled in but quickly dried up. One night, several family members received a strange phone call traced to a Florida truck stop—but when they answered, no one was there.

Then, silence.

Years later, in 2013, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) took over the case after a set of remains was found in a nearby county. The family’s hope surged briefly—only to be crushed when testing confirmed the remains did not belong to Stephanie. Still, the GBI kept the case open, revisiting it every six months in search of new leads.

Investigators believe Stephanie left the bar with someone she knew—someone who has kept that secret all these years. The bar itself has long since been demolished, and the memories of that night have faded for many.

Her family has endured decades of waiting—parents who died never knowing what happened, and siblings who still refuse to give up. They have held onto hope through heartbreak, believing that the truth is still out there somewhere along Highway 301.

Stephanie stood 5’6”, weighed about 130 pounds, and had light brown or blonde hair, sometimes dyed red. She was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt with an image of Robert E. Lee, blue jeans, and white athletic shoes. She had a pierced tongue and ears, a mole on her left cheek, and a thumb ring shaped like a ring within a ring.

The years have passed, but Stephanie’s name still echoes through the streets of Jesup—a reminder that time may dull memory, but it never silences love. Her family continues to ask the same question they asked in 2001: What happened to Stephanie?
